Afghan Coal Mine
Despite it's large amount of untold wealth underground, Afghanistan struggles to get on it's feet of economic stability. Before the Russian invasion Karkar employed a thousand miners and was a thriving industrial complex where thousands of tones of coal were produced per year. Czechoslovakia once supplied the mine with equipment and engineers. Now only a couple hundred miners work in the soot filled tunnels. Accidents are frequent and medical supplies are low in a place where two huge explosions had previously taken more than 200 lives.

Istanbul now and the Pope's visit to Turkey
Pope Benedict XVI visits Turkey and Istanbul youth culture
Pope Benedict XVI reassured wary Muslims and promoted reconciliation among Christians during a four-day trip to Turkey that concluded December 1st 2006. Benedict XVI angered Muslims in September by quoting a 14th-century Byzantine emperor, who disparaged Islam as "evil and inhuman." A significant portion of the popes trip to Turkey was devoted to repairing the damage done by that speech. In Istanbul, the pope visited the Blue Mosque, where he prayed with the Grand Mufti of Istanbul, Mustafa Cagrici. Benedict XVI also expressed support of Turkeys bid for membership in the European Union. "How can we fail to think of the various events which took place here and forged our common history?" the pope said.

Afghan Elections 2005
Parliamentary and Provincial Elections 2005 As attention is drawn away from President Karzai, Afghanistan prepares for it's Parliamentary elections. Up to 12.5 million Afghans prepare their vote for the nearly 6,000 Afghan men and women whom have signed up to run in the country's first parliamentary polls in more than 30 years, scheduled for September 18. About 100,000 troops, including 22,000 U.S.-led troops and 10,000 NATO-led peacekeepers, will provide security for election day. Afghan and U.S. officials have warned that the Taliban might try to sabotage the vote, the next big step in Afghanistan's difficult path to stability, but would not be able to derail it.
